Vaccinations are an integral part of pet care and ownership. In order to help provide a healthy and long life for your pet, it is important to make sure they stay current and up-to-date on all of their vaccinations. Below we have provided detailed information regarding all of the vaccinations we have to offer here at Crookston Pet Clinic for both our canine and feline companions.
Rabies
Rabies is a vaccination that is required by law in the city of Crookston for all of your canine and feline friends. A fatal virus, rabies is contracted by a bite of another animal currently infected with rabies. Here in Minnesota, the number one culprit for carrying rabies is skunks. While your pet may not often come in contact with potential carriers of this disease, it is important to maintain their vaccinations not only because of the law, but for their safety and yours.
*If you are located outside of the city of Crookston, please contact your local law enforcement for laws regarding your pet's vaccination requirements.

Canine Vaccinations
DAP (Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2 (Hepatitis)-Parvovirus)
This is a core vaccination that is highly recommended by all veterinarians and canine professionals. Often referred to as "Distemper Vaccination" it includes three of the most common illness that canines can 'catch'. Distemper is a virus that nearly every dog will be exposed to at one point in its life and if not vaccinated or treated, may cause death. The Hepatitis virus is spread through contact with urine, feces and other secretions from infected animals. The dog's liver is the primary affected organ and death is possible in very severe cases. Finally, Parvovirus is a highly contagious and debilitating virus spread through infected feces. It is very hardy and can survive for months in the environment. Once again, severe cases can cause death, so it is important for your dog to receive a vaccination against these viruses. |
Kennel Cough
This is a non-core vaccination that can be received upon request. This vaccination is required for all dogs going into boarding or day care situations and sometimes even grooming. Several types of bacteria and viruses cause infection and inflammation in the lungs and respiration system of dogs, and this vaccination helps to prevent that. As they can be highly contagious and are transmitted via the air, it is important that dogs receive this vaccination before being introduced into one of the previously stated situations.
Lyme Disease
This tick-borne disease can have huge repercussions that will affect your dog such as: lameness, anorexia, fever, stiffness, joint pain, and depression. With ticks being common in Minnesota we recommend yearly testing and vaccination against lyme disease. This simple yearly blood test and vaccination, along with diligent tick-preventative medication, can go a long way to keeping your pet happy and healthy for years to come. Ask us next time you are in for more information on testing and vaccinating your pet.
Leptospirosis
At our clinics, we provide a combination vaccination that includes both lyme and lepto vaccines for your canine friend. Leptospirosis (commonly referred to as 'Lepto'), is a deadly bacterial disease spread by wildlife. It is carried in the urine of infected animals and spread when your dog drinks or wades through contaminated water sources (such as puddles). Take the extra step with us here by getting your dog it's yearly lyme/lepto vaccination and keep your pet healthy and safe.

Feline Vaccinations
PRC (Panleukopenia-Rhinotracheitis-Calici)
This is a core vaccination that is highly recommended by veterinarians and feline professionals. Often referred to as "Distemper Vaccination" it includes three of the most common illness that felines can 'catch'.
Also known as distemper, panleukopenia is a widespread and often fatal disease. Much like canine distemper, most cats are likely to be exposed to this disease at least once in their lifetime which is what makes this vaccination so important. Rhinotracheitis is also a common disease in cats, providing clinical signs such as sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge. This upper respiratory infection is very common in boarding situations. Calici is another upper respiratory virus that accounts for nearly 40% of all respiratory diseases in cats. Even if treated, your cat can become a chronic carrier with lifelong symptoms, so it is best to vaccinate your cat right from the start (6-8 weeks of age).

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)
This virus attacks your cats immune system and leaves them vulnerable to host secondary infection, very similar to how HIV affects humans. Transmission is typically through contact with infected cats, so those who are in multi-cat homes or are permitted to be outdoors are at a higher risk. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) While listed here, at this time this is not a core vaccination that we recommend at our clinics. Very similar to FelV in cats, FIV eventually weakens the immune system until they are too weak to fight off other disease. However, contrary to popular belief, it is not the same virus as HIV in humans. There is no cure for this virus and 1 in 12 cats in the US test positive. |
